Things to know about living in Italy

If you’re planning on making the move and living in Italy, congratulations – it’s a fantastic choice. The food, coffee, people, and beautiful Mediterranean sunshine make Italy one of the best countries in the world to live in. Here are some things you should know about living in Italy.

Fashion is a way of life

We all know that the streets of Milan are some of the most fashionable places in the world. Famed for being the HQ of Gucci, Prada, and Versace, amongst others, the people of the city manage to look effortlessly stylish wherever they go. That’s not to say that you should feel out of place if you aren’t fashionable, though.

Coffee is a staple

Coffee is taken seriously in Italy. Don’t even think about asking where the nearest Starbucks is – this is the proper stuff. Italians generally have small, strong cups of coffee – espressos are common – and they will shot it back at the bar quickly before moving on to the rest of their day. Cappuccinos are served in Italy, but only for breakfast.

Don’t ever criticise the food

Italians love their food dearly. It’s less to do with fuel, although it is largely very healthy, and more to do with deliciousness. Many places around the world claim to serve Italian food, but real pizza and pasta dishes that you will get in Italy itself are nothing like what you’ll find in the UK. Once you’ve lived in Italy for a while, you’ll realise the real extent of this!

There is a north/south divide

While both areas of Italy are well worth visiting and have unique appeals for both tourists and residents, there is a striking north/south divide. Most of Italy’s cities are in its north, and the south is much more rural – so where you choose to live depends on your personal tastes. You will also find a lot of regional differences throughout the cities and areas, so pick the area where you want to live in carefully. Don’t worry if it sounds a bit complicated – our team can give you great advice!

Italy is a wonderful country and living there is an experience like no other. Whether you’re moving overseas for retirement, or if you are looking to advance your career in the country, we’re sure you’ll love your time there.
